HBC Away Day 2021

On a wet and windy Tuesday last week, 50 of us made it to the HBC Away Day 2021 held at Rothamsted Research. We were delighted to be joined by another 17 online to share in the day! With the 2020 event being held online due the covid pandemic this was the first time in more than 18 months that many of us had seen each other!

We kicked off with an introductory session where we got to know some interesting facts about each other. In our midst we have

  • A chess champion
  • Someone that is friends with Lewis Hamilton’s sister
  • Someone that has had a snooker match with Steve Davis
  • A synchronized swimmer

…there are many more but who knew!

Richard Hearne gave us a look back at The History of Building Control, and Les Ryder gave a presentation on Major Projects. John Swainson enlightened us with legal past precedents before our guest from the charity Mind had us relaxing into our seats, dropping our shoulders and concentrating on our breathing!

HBC Away Day 3 images lecture theatre and lunch!

A superb spread of food greeted us each time we left the lecture theatre and it just kept on coming!

Another guest at our HBC Away Day 2021 included Helen Standen joined us to tell us about the board and how their primary objectives are to ensure the company is sustainable, ensure people are paid appropriately, and finally to ensure our people are safe, as well as the more strategic management they input into.

The afternoon had us concentrating on future strategy and values. Our stories from work gave examples of fulfilling the things that we are proud of as a group. Not to mention even more food provided by Rothampstead Research.
