With brownfield-first planning policy now standard, ground contamination has moved from a specialist concern to a routine consideration. Site investigations undertaken to satisfy planning requirements under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 focus primarily on risks to end-use occupiers and groundwater protection. However, construction workers who must excavate, handle, and work on contaminated ground face different exposure routes and durations, which fall under CDM 2015 and involve separate health and safety considerations.
This session explores how information flows between planning, building control, and construction safety regimes, examining risks associated with heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and ground gases, including classification in accordance with BS 8485.
