Hertfordshire Building Control provided the building control service for the redevelopment of Hertfordshire Constabulary’s headquarters in Welwyn Garden City.
The first major phase of the wider redevelopment programme has delivered a new 10,000 sq. m headquarters building, creating a modern working environment for more than 600 operational staff.
The building comprises two main office wings connected by a four-storey central atrium, topped by an impressive glulam timber roof. Alongside open-plan and agile workspaces, the headquarters includes meeting rooms, a gym, restaurant and supporting office facilities.
The design makes use of the site’s seven-metre change in level, while providing extensive daylight and views across the surrounding landscape. Carefully designed external spaces support staff wellbeing, biodiversity and sustainable drainage.
The project was developed to meet high standards of sustainability and occupant wellbeing, with BREEAM Excellent and WELL Platinum certification targeted.
Hertfordshire Building Control worked with the project team throughout the construction programme, providing regulatory oversight and technical input through to completion. The Compliance Certificate was handed over in July 2026, ahead of staff moving into the new headquarters.
