Main Contractor: Ashe Construction Architect: Chase New Homes
Building Control : Hertfordshire Building Control (HBC)
This project will bring more than 240 affordable homes to Stevenage. Helping hundreds of local families to get onto the housing ladder. It is being developed on the site of the former DuPont factory and is due to be completed by February 2020. It consists of 208 homes for shared ownership, 40 rented homes and 6 homes for private sale.
Representing a large investment in affordable housing the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), is helping to fund this project by investing around £6 million.
Building Control – Application Stage
HBC were delighted to deliver a Building Control service for this project that represents such an important contribution to the local community. We allocated one of our experienced and qualified Senior Surveyors, Michael Joseph BSc MRICS FRACS MIFPO to work with the design team. He is being ably assisted by Graduate Surveyor Martin Elliott.
A good level of communication was necessary between Michael and Chase Homes Project Manager Alan Turner. This was intended to flag up any potential compliance issues as soon as possible to avoid any costly delays or revisions. Communication will continue until we are in a position to issue a full approval of the scheme.
Hertfordshire Building Control were also able to meet with Fire Safety Inspector John Parker from Herts Fire & Rescue. We discussed fire brigade access to the new properties and fire safety issues in the common escape routes to establish that we were in agreement on compliance.

Building Control – Site Work
HBC have been able to coordinate a highly responsive service carrying out site inspections of work in progress at the agreed stages for notification. Chase can expect to receive a same day inspection when we are notified by 10:00 am. We can also carry out multiple same day inspections to assist the progress of the work. In the 6 months from commencement of works in June 2017 our A1 team of Surveyors have carried out 14 site inspections. They have been busy checking the pile and beam foundations, drainage and other elements. We have been pleased to note that Chase and Ashe Construction have a very competent site management team. Standards of workmanship are to a high standard.
Site safety is of paramount importance to this contractor and all our Surveyors are trained on associated risks. They are properly equipped with Personal Protective Equipment and have attended a presentation in line with the company’s safety policy.
A1 Team Head of Building Control David Eggleton recently visited the site in January 2018. He was pleased to receive confirmation that there is an excellent working relationship between site staff and our Surveyor team. We will ensure that this continues through to signing off all the units as satisfactorily complete.
