Earlier this week MHCLG announced that an amended version of Approved Document B covering fire safety in buildings is now available. This follows on from their 2019 consultation on proposed revisions to the guidance. Having looked through the amendments the changes in the new version are focussed on fire safety provisions in blocks of flats. This relates to:
A reduction in the building height at which sprinkler systems are mandatory from 30m to 11m.
A new recommendation for wayfinding signage to assist the fire service in dealing with fires in flats. Detailed guidance is included to cover floor identification and flat indication signage within blocks with storeys over 11m.
The changes take effect on 26 November 2020 for use in England. The 2019 edition of Approved Document B continues to apply where a Building Notice or Full Plans application has been made to a local authority before that date and the building work to which it relates is started before 29 January 2021.
